Whether she is on the red carpet in curve-hugging gowns or snapping pics in lingerie for social media, Kim Kardashian seems to ooze confidence. But the 38-year-old reality star turned businesswoman says she struggles with body insecurities “all the time.”

In a recent interview with People, Kim said she often sees photographs of herself that she doesn’t love. “I am photographed all the time,” she told the publication. “A few years ago I was photographed and I had cellulite on my thighs [wearing a bikin in Mexico. And I was like, ‘Okay. I do not like how I look. I am going to get to the gym.’”

She goes onto explain how she turns self-doubt into motivation: “For me, I always use it as motivation even when people are really unjustly critical. I just use it as motivation. I want to just work harder to figure out why I am feeling that way.”

Tuning out negative thoughts is never easy, especially when you are constantly being critiqued and criticized by the public, so Kim works hard to to be kind to herself. “I do have cellulite,” she said. “You’re never going to be perfect. I think life is about being happy and being confident.”

This isn’t the first time Kim has opened up about her body insecurities. In a 2017 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, she addressed how the media’s obsession with her physique has affected her self-esteem. “You take pictures and people just body shame you,” she said. “It’s like literally giving me body dysmorphia.”

Kim continued: “I think people think I’m so confident, and I’m so secure, and I’m so this, and I’m not. Like, I’m so insecure. I just can’t take it.”

And while it may be hard to understand how someone who projects so much confidence battles body insecurities, it’s important to remember that Kim is human. Approximately 91 percent of women are unhappy with their bodies, and body dysmorphia affects up to 3 percent of the population.

Kim has taken her body insecurities and turned them into multimillion-dollar business, with the hope of boosting confidence in women worldwide. KKW Beauty puts out products that are meant to work as tools for women to like the most beautiful versions of themselves, and the recent launch of SKIMS, her size-inclusive shapewear line, sold out within minutes (after literally breaking the Internet).

“That was really exciting for me just to start a brand that I feel like is a necessity,” she said when speaking Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on The Today Show. “I wanted people and women to feel confident and comfortable.”
