Nike is changing the game yet again. The brand first introduced the Nike Pro Hijab in December of 2017, furthering their commitment to inclusivity in sports. Now, they have released the Nike Victory Swim Collection, which features four full-coverage swimwear pieces, including a waterproof hijab.
“As [Nik designers continued learning from athletes across diverse communities, they saw a striking gap in apparel for water sports,” the brand’s press release reads. “Specifically, a lack of options for female athletes who don’t want to choose between modesty and movement with comfort and confidence.”
The statement continues: “Existing products were lacking in either coverage or functionality, athletes shared, leaving them feeling weighted down by baggy garments, battling drag instead of striving toward personal bests or worrying about whether their hijabs and coverings would remain in place.”
In response, Nike created a collection featuring the Victory Full-Coverage Swimsuit, the Victory Swim Tunic Top, the Victory Swim Leggings, and Nike Victory Swim Hijab, all of which are designed to bring “performance innovation to modest swimwear.”
Not only is the company keeping the athlete’s cultural practices in mind, but have also carefully considered the athlete’s performance. The Swim Hijab, for example, has a built-in mesh pocket that holds hair in place underwater, a game-changer for female swimmers. Each piece in the Victory collection is made from lightweight, warp-knit fabric, offering a full range of motion in the water. The fabric is also quick-drying and offers head-to-toe UPF 40+ sun protection.

“I think a lot of women will be excited for this swimsuit. It’s not just Muslim women. A lot of women are modest as well.” ⠀ Making waves in the Nike Victory Swim Collection, featuring lightweight, full-coverage swimsuits designed to give you freedom of movement in the water.
Nike notes that it’s not designed just for Muslim women, either, as athletes of all walks of life might want the option to practice modesty.
“The more we listened, the more possibility we saw to serve female athletes in new dimensions,” says Martha Moore, Nike Creative Director, VP. “As we continue broadening our vision for innovation, we’re excited to inspire more women to see themselves in sport by thinking creatively and designing inclusively. To us, Nike Victory Swim Collection shows the power of innovation to invite all women to discover the joy of sport.”
Nike is just one of many brands expanding to include hijab-wearing individuals. In 2017, Mattel released the first Barbie doll in history to wear a hijab, and earlier this year, Sports Illustrated announced it would feature their first Muslim model to wear a hijab.
The Nike Victory Swim Collection officially launches on February 1, 2020 at nike.com and at select retailers globally.
