Another day, another bizarre beauty hack. Over the past few weeks, people have been posting videos of themselves gluing their upper lip to the curved indentation of skin on the top edge of the lip. The idea is that this trick gives the illusion of a bigger pout, without actually getting lip injections.
The videos, which are going viral on the new social media platform TikTok, appear to be a result of the latest internet challenge. It all started when a user named @chloehammock4 shared a video of herself applying glue above the upper lip, fanning it dry some, and then pressing her upper lip back onto the adhesive. She tops it off with a Kylie Cosmetics liquid lipstick.
The result? An insanely plump upper lip. Here, have a look for yourself:

Considering the obsession with big lips, it comes as no surprise that the glue lip challenge spurned others on social media to recreate the video, with people using lash adhesive, nail glue, and in some cases, even super glue to mimic the effect of fillers. Similar to the outrageous Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge from 2015 that left teens with cuts and bruises on their mouths, this is yet another example of social media’s herd mentality influence. Research shows social media sites encourage people do something simply because of the number of likes a similar post has received, without thinking through the consequences.

The latest glue lip challenge is just as questionable – dangerous even. As Shari Marchbein, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant professor of clinical dermatology at NYU’s School of Medicine in. New York City, explained to Allure, “The primary ingredient [in g is cyanoacrylate, meant to glue things like metals and paper, not the delicate skin of the face. Acrylates can be both extremely irritating to the skin as well as cause true allergic reactions which can result in redness, swelling, blistering, infection, and even permanent scarring. Since acrylates are toxic, there is even a risk of ingesting them when applied this close to the mouth.”
What’s more, think about how painful the removal process would be. Ouch! Applying glue to your lips is a bad idea all around. If you want to make your pout appear fuller without filler, try overlining your lips with a lip liner or applying a plumping lip gloss.
